There are many discrepancies between the two polls, but Wake Forest High is clearly #1 in the state. Coming in at #138 nationally, the Cougars are looking to defend their 4AA state championship this season with 17 starters returning on both sides of the ball. Led by Head Coach Reggie Lucas and preseason all-state running back Devon Lawrence, the only thing that stands in the way of another title is a daunting schedule. Wake Forest opens the season August 18th against Millbrook who they beat 36-0 last season. However, the next Friday the schedule gets much more difficult when the Cougars take on #8 Richmond County. The going gets even tougher the next Friday when Middle Creek comes to town. Middle Creek, #9 and #7 in each poll respectively, will be out for a bit of revenge for last season’s 17-20 loss at the hands of Wake Forest in the Regional Final. Back-to-back trips to Leesville Road and Southern Nash the next two weeks will leave a good indication of how good this team really is. The Cougars regular-season comes to an end with a massive rivalry match-up with #6 Heritage at home.

University of Georgia commit Zamir White seems to be the consensus #1 player in the state of North Carolina. In fact, the Scotland County High running back is also the top ball carrier in the nation according to many polls. After examining White’s recruiting tape it’s easy to see why. This guy is a monster. His combination of power and elusiveness to go with his 6’1”, 220-pound frame draw comparisons to Darren McFadden in his heyday at Arkansas. He has run for 5,000 yards and 85 touchdowns through his first three seasons in high school. Scotland County is ranked #2 in the state by and #7 by, but if this team is going to make any noise in November, it starts and ends with Zamir White.

With such depth in talent this season, 2017 is packed with some big Friday Night match-ups the fall. Here’s some to circle on the calendar:
