Friday Night Recap Week 5

Friday Night Spotlight Game of the Week

#3 Mallard Creek 30, #8 Harding University 9

Harding University High School’s football program has come a long way since their 1-10 record during the 2015 season. That was Sam Greiner’s first season as the Rams head coach. Last season, they improved to 5-7. The Rams haven’t even sniffed winning record in a decade, but heading into Friday Night, they were 4-0 and #8 in the latest 4A poll. Without a doubt, Friday’s matchup hosting perennial Charlotte power-house Mallard Creek would provide the measuring stick for how far the Harding University program has come. Aside from 2019 #1 ranked Harding University RB Quavaris Crouch, defenses controlled the game. Crouch put the first points on the board in the 1st quarter on a 20-yard touchdown run to give the Rams a 6-0 lead. The star junior RB finished with 226 yards on 37 carries. On Mallard Creek’s next drive, Harding forced a fumble that eventually was converted into a 36-yard field goal to push the lead to 9-0. Before the half, the Mavericks finally got on the board with a 31-yard field goal. Both offenses continued to struggle in the 2nd half, exchanging punts for field position for most of the quarter. In the last minutes of the 3rd quarter, Harding University went back to punt but the snap went well over the punter’s head. When finally downed, the ball was Mallard Creek’s on the 1-yard line. Instantly the momentum was all in the Mavericks favor and one play later Senior RB Nasjzae Bryant broke the plane for the TD. The point after gave the Mavericks a 10-9 lead. They wouldn’t look back from there. Harding was moving downfield on their next drive but fumbled in the red zone that was scooped up by Mallard Creek DB Adonis Henderson who returned it 80-yards for the touchdown. The Ram offensive struggles continued the next drive where they fumbled again, losing the ball in the own territory. The Mavericks would capitalize with a Jadyn Washington 23-yard touchdown run making the lead 23-9. Adonis Henderson would put the final nail in Harding University’s coffin with a 35-yard pick-6 late in the 4th quarter. The win moves Mallard Creek to 4-0 on the season, they play Friday night at conference foe Z.B. Vance. Harding University suffers their first loss of the season to drop to 4-1. The Rams will look to rebound Friday at home versus another tough opponent in a conference matchup against West Mecklenburg.
