Friday Night Recap Week 3

QMS Game of the Week: #11 Middle Creek 16 @ #1 Wake Forest 56

Through the first two weeks of the season, our QMS Game of the Week has been won by the road team on each occasion, the latter being against the Middle Creek Mustangs. For their sake, visiting #11 Middle Creek hoped to harness some of that magic in Week 3 at #1 Wake Forest Monday night. The contest was postponed until Labor Day due to storms in the area, but Wake Forest High School Football Stadium was ready to go Monday. The Mustangs were also out for a bit of revenge, looking to get retaliation for their 17-20 loss at the hands of eventual champion Cougars in the regional final a season ago. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, the Wake Forest Cougars didn’t get the memo. Wake Forest flexed their muscle all night in every aspect of the game. Through the air, Cougar Sr. QB Chris James was an efficient 7-8 on pass attempts for 116 yards and 3 TDs. Two of James’ TDs went to Sr. WR Lex Goodwin and one to Jr. ATH Mateo Sudipo. The Cougar run-game was even better. Within the first minute of the game, Sr. RB Marquis Dunn broke a 60-yard end to the end zone to break the initial seal. Dunn finished with 123 yards on 8 carries. Cougar star RB Devon Lawrence was all over the place Monday night. He notched 2 rushing TDs on 14 carries and 66 yards, 51 yards on 2 receptions, and 105 yards and a TD on kick returns, including the 87-yarder to put the icing on top with 41 seconds on the clock. He ended with 223 all-purpose yards on the evening. While all of this was occurring, the defense was pitching a gem. At halftime, the Cougars led 28-0. At the end of the 3rd Quarter, the Wake Forest lead was 49-0. Middle Creek and QB Andrew Ihle scored two garbage time touchdowns in the fourth before Lawrence’s final exclamation point. Overall, the Wake Forest offense was efficient and effective running only 39 offensive plays compared to Middle Creek’s 69 offensive plays.  It’ll be a quick turnaround for both teams this week. Wake Forest’s (3-0) schedule presents another potential test as the Cougars travel to Leesville Road (2-1). Middle Creek will look to get their season out of the dumps at Millbrook (1-2).

Now that everyone in the state has two to three games under their belts, the season is finally beginning to bloom into shape. Though we’ve only been working our way through the non-conference part of most schedules, these first few weeks are the litmus test for the entire season. Many teams in the state are thriving at this point and it’s starting to show in the polls. Other teams have been utter disappointments. It’s time for some of these teams to look in the mirror and decide where they want to be by season’s end. Adjustments are going to be made, that’s inevitable. The tough will get their season turned around, the weak will falter. That’s how high school football goes. So far, it looks like Wake Forest, West Forsyth, and Heritage is the cream of the crop in 4A. However, don’t be surprised if teams like West Mecklenburg, Hoggard, and Myers Park look to knock on the door soon. In 3A, Dudley and Charlotte Catholic have been on a war-path so far, especially with Dudley knocking off 4A #5 Page this week. Look for schools like Weddington, Southeast Guilford, and New Hanover to start challenging for those top few spots in polls to come. There are several teams in 2A that are certified contenders, obviously headed by #1 Shelby and #2 South Point. There are also teams behind the initial contenders that could become certifiable within the coming weeks. 1A #1 Tarboro has been dismantling opponents this season out-scoring them 139-14 through 3 games. They are going to be tough for any 1A team to stop.
