Friday Night Spotlight Recap 8/18/17

Game of the Week: #5 Page at #3 Davie

Nervous anticipation filled the stadium in Mocksville Friday night. Not only were the Davie County War Eagles kicking off their 2017 campaign, they were also opening the new War Eagle Stadium on their new campus. To intensify matters, Davie County was opening with a tough opponent, Greensboro’s Page High Pirates. By MaxPreps.com rankings, Davie County and Page went into the game as the #3 and #5 teams, respectively, in the 4A pre-season poll. Both teams ended up runners up in their respective state championship games last season. This game was supposed to be a hard-fought battle; it lived up to the billing. Last season, Davie County took the season-opener at Page 39-29. Without a doubt Page would be looking to spoil the christening of War Eagle Stadium. Once the game began, defense was on showcase. Between both teams, only twelve first downs were gained all night. Page lost a fumble on their first possession, QB Josh Hall hit Jack Reynolds with a 26-yard TD strike to give Davie County a 7-0 lead. Page hit big once in the first half on a Naim Bradsher 50-yard TD run; however, the play was called back on a holding penalty and Bradsher was disqualified on an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the play. The score remained 7-0 in favor of Davie County until Hall hit Evan Little with a 38-yard TD in the 3rd quarter. Up 14-0 mid way through the fourth quarter, Davie was stopped short on 4th down and Page took over on downs. Freshly appointed Page head coach Jared Rolfes was as skeptical as anyone else in the stadium over Page’s chance to win at that junction stating, “I was struggling at the end; I didn’t know how we were going to score twice in the last five minutes.” Then Page was finally able to break into the end zone with 4:51 left on the clock. QB Jayvondre Paige found a wide-open Nick Baker with an across the body throw for a 58-yard score. Two plays and 35 game seconds after kicking the ball back to Davie County, momentum shifted for good. Page junior safety Alex Angus went up and snagged a Josh Hall pass over Jack Reynolds and returned it for a 38-yard pick-6 to tie the contest at 14 after the PAT banked in off the right goal post. Neither squad could score before the end of regulation so the game progressed into overtime. Page won the coin and elected to play defense first. Davie County took the ball down deep into Page territory where the drive stalled out. Page then blocked the ensuing field goal returned it to the Davie 10-yard line. Page’s first play from scrimmage was an option-read left in which QB Paige kept and cut up field and to the house to score and win the game. Almost all offense in this game was earned via the big play as Davie County only had 81 yards of total offense and Page only 169 yards of total offense, a good bit of which was offset by 78 yards in penalties. Davie County (0-1) will try to regroup next week as it takes on 2A contender North Davidson on the road. Page (1-0) will host Northern Guilford in their home-opener.
