Friday Night Recap Week 12

NC High School Football Week 12

The regular season of NC High School Football season has finally concluded. Week 12 was as great as advertised. Check out the action from around the top 25.

Spotlight: Game of the Week

#6 Heritage (10-1, 4-1) 14, #3 Wake Forest (11-0, 5-0) 38

With undefeated records and a conference championship on the line, Heritage and Wake Forest went to battle. Heritage scored first on a Ricky Person touchdown. Then the game turned sharply. Wake Forest reeled off 35 straight points to cruise to victory over their archrivals.

Devon Lawrence handled 16 carries for 105 yards and a touchdown. After the game, the senior running back announced his commitment to North Carolina. Marquis Dunn accounted for three Cougar touchdowns for 147 all-purpose yards. Seth Williams led Wake Forest with 14 total tackles.

Gunnar Holmberg and Ricky Person have had excellent seasons, but the Wake Forest defense was too much for the Heritage offense. Person accounted for both of Heritage’s touchdowns but was limited to 63 rushing yards on 21 carries. His lowest output of the season and only his second game all season under 180 rushing yards. Holmberg also put up season-low numbers. The Duke commit tossed for 102 yards and threw two interceptions on 13 for 20 passing.

With the win, Wake Forest claims the Northern 4A Conference Championship. They’ll enter the playoffs looking to defend their 4AA State Championship.

#8 West Forsyth (10-0, 5-0) 17, #5 Glenn (10-1, 4-1) 14

In another de facto conference championship game, West Forsyth capped off an undefeated season by beating formerly-undefeated Glenn in Kernersville.

Glenn took the lead early when Dysuan Razzak took a Stephon Brown pass 65 yards to the end zone. That would be the only score of the first half. After the break, West Forsyth notched the game at seven on a JaQuan McMillian nine-yard touchdown run. In the fourth, Matthew Harkley broke the tie with a 32-yard field goal to give West Forsyth a 10-7 lead.

Jaylon McMillion all but sealed the game for the Titans when he picked off Brown and returned it for a touchdown later in the quarter. “I was sitting on the sideline. My coach said every time we’re in a boundary call ‘screw,’” McMillon said. “‘Screw’” is when I come up, the safety gets back. They’ve been throwing hitches all day. … I jumped it, took off, next thing you know I scored.”

Under three minutes to play, the Bobcats cut the lead to three. Brown found Braxton Rorie in the end zone with a 39-yard touchdown pass with under three minutes to play. However, on the next possession, Glenn was unable to stop West Forsyth from moving the chains.

West Forsyth is Central Piedmont 4A Champions and figures to be highly seeded in the NCHSAA playoffs.

3A #5 New Hanover (10-1, 6-1) 7, #13 Hoggard (11-0, 7-0) 34

Wilmington’s most anticipated matchup of the season was a letdown. Though New Hanover is classified as a 3A high school, they don’t fool anyone. They still have the heart of a 4A powerhouse. Unfourtunly, the Hoggard Vikings knew better as well. Hoggard has been preparing for this battle of undefeated juggernauts all season long and Friday Night it all came to fruition. The Vikings took it to the cross-town rival Wildcats 34-7.

Hoggard QB Josh Jones led the way offensively for the Vikings. The senior completed 11 passes on 17 attempts for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Tre Houser hauled in six of those passes for 104 yards and touchdown. Jones also ran for 80 yards on 16 carries. The Viking defense was stifling all night long.  Daniel Eason, Brooks Carey, and Garrett Manning each recorded two tackles for loss; the defense unit had nine in total. Eason also forced a fumble that McKenzie Frazier scooped up and took to the end zone.

For New Hanover, star athlete Wiz Vaughn was held under 100-yards all-purpose for the first time this season. Hoggard fans can thank DB Isaiah Kemp for that. The senior followed Vaughn around the field all night long and won for the most part. Overall, the Wildcat offense struggled as a unit against the vaunted Viking defense. In total, New Hanover only managed 48 rushing yards on 19 carries.

Mideastern 3A/4A supremacy belongs to the undefeated Vikings. Both New Hanover and Hoggard should be tough outs in their respective playoff brackets.

#1 Charlotte Catholic (11-0, 7-0) 49, #2 Marvin Ridge (10-1, 6-1) 21

As they’ve done all season, Charlotte Catholic rolled again Friday Night. This time it happened to be over #2 Marvin Ridge for the Southern Carolina 3A Conference Title. At halftime, the Cougars were in complete control up 35-14. They would ultimately cruise to a 49-21 final.

Milian Howard led the way for the Charlotte Catholic offense. The senior RB carried the ball 14 times for 247 yards and three touchdowns. Chris Walton completed five of his six pass attempts for 74 yards and two touchdowns, one to Holden Schachte and one to Garrett McKernan. On the other side of the ball, the Cougar defense was all over the place. Brian Jacobs (16), Adam Robbe (10), and Ty Foley (10) led the Charlotte Catholic defense in tackles.

Marvin Ridge had two runners eclipse 100 rushing yards (Caleb Deveaux: 17/100, Bryce McLain: 13/102), but the offense as a whole couldn’t match up with the firepower of Charlotte Catholic. On the evening, Deveaux and McLain were responsible for 80% of the Mavericks total yardage.

Next in line for Charlotte Catholic, a run at another state title.

#2 Shelby (9-2, 4-1) 15, #1 South Point (11-0, 5-0) 35

In the second matchup of one versus two, 2A powers Shelby and South Point met in Belmont with the Southwestern crown up for grabs. Last season, South Point won the 3A State Championship and Shelby won the 2AA State Championship. After reclassification, the two found themselves in the same conference.

South Point dominated throughout. On the first series, the Red Raiders forced a Shelby punt after three plays. During the punt, Mathew Robinson got a hand on the kick, recovered the football, and took the turnover 15 yards for a touchdown. On Shelby’s ensuing drive, South Point forced another three-and-out. Shelby managed to successfully kick the football away and the South Point offense took the field for their first possession of the game. Two plays later, the Red Raiders were in the end zone again. Fullback Jake Lawerence took a carry 56 yards to the house and the score.

After the game, Shelby coach Lance Ware gave all the credit to South Point. “We got out-coached and outplayed,” Ware said. “We didn’t play well at all, we had too many mistakes. Hats off to South Point.” The Golden-Lion head man added, “We flat out got beat, there’s no way to sugar coat it,” Shelby’s Ware said. “Hopefully this group will rebound and maybe will see them again down here (in the playoffs).”

As aforementioned, both teams are coming off state championships. Depending on how the brackets shake out, look for these two teams to meet up again late in the playoffs.

Friday Night Spotlight 11/3

Week 12 Top 25

The time is now. It’s the final week of the regular season, week 12. There are so many things on the line tonight. Undefeated seasons, conference championships, playoff berths, and hometown pride all hang in the balance. Without a doubt, they’ve saved the best for last. Across the state, massive match-ups will change the landscape of the season.

Just north of Raleigh, two of the best teams in the state and fierce rivals, Wake Forest and Heritage, will battle for the rights to an undefeated season and the Northern 4A Conference Title. In another matchup between undefeated squads, Glenn hosts West Forsyth with the Central Piedmont 4A Championship on the line. Down in Wilmington, New Hanover and Hoggard put their undefeated records on the table for Mideastern Conference supremacy.

In one of two bouts between the top two teams in the classification, #1 Charlotte Catholic hosts #2 Marvin Ridge for the Southern Carolina 3A Championship. The other matchup between number one and number two features #2 Shelby (9-1, 4-0) at #1 South Point (10-0, 4-0). The winner of that heavyweight fight will earn the Southwestern 2A Championship.

We hope you are ready. Tonight’s games are going to be phenomenal.

Friday Night Recap Week 11

Week 11

Friday Night Spotlight Game of the Week

#13 Newton-Conover 27, #22 Maiden 30

In a week 11 battle of rival devils, blue and red respectively, Maiden and Newton-Conover put on a thriller. Both teams came into the game tied atop the South Fork 2A Standings, each with a 5-0 conference record. A win by Maiden would guarantee at least a share of the conference title. If Newton-Conover won, a win versus East Lincoln next week would secure a conference crown for the Red Devils. Also on the line, Maiden’s perfect record. After the opening kickoff, the two schools went back and forth all night. Every time one team scored, the other would respond and put points on the board.

The game was decided on Maiden’s final drive. With less than four minutes to play in the game, the Red Devils punted to Maiden hoping their defense could hold their 27-23 lead. Maiden took over on their own 19-yard line. That’s when senior QB Keygan Mayfield and junior WR Caleb McDaniel, who had connected for two touchdowns already, went to work. Within a minute, the Blue Devils were crossing midfield. After a couple of incomplete passes, Maiden faced a 3rd-and-8. Right on cue, McDaniel came up big again. This time the junior snagged a pass out of a crowd and moved the sticks.

Under 45 seconds to play, Maiden had backed up the Newton-Conover defense to their own 8-yard line. Then, Maiden was flagged for holding and called back to the Newton-Conover 28. The extra space was exactly what they needed. On the next play, McDaniel broke free on a post route and Mayfield found him in the end zone with 25 seconds left. Casey Ly punched in the PAT and Maiden took a 30-27 lead. With only 25 seconds on the scoreboard, Newton-Conover was out of time and the victory belonged to Maiden.

Final Notes

Keygan Mayfield finished the game with 274 passing yards on 19/25 pass attempts and also ran for 104 yards on 20 attempts. The senior QB scored all four of Maiden’s touchdowns (3 pass, 1 rush). Caleb McDaniel caught twelve passes for 161 yards and all three of Mayfield’s TD passes. Sophomore Dylan Abernethy also got in the action, hauling in five passes for 99 yards. For Newton-Conover, Shamar Baker through for 227 yards on 11/20 pass attempts.

Maiden (10-0, 6-0) remains undefeated on the season and now owns a share of the South Fork 2A Conference title. The Blue Devils can claim the title all to themselves with a win at Lincolnton (5-5, 4-2) this Friday Night. Newton-Conover (8-2, 5-1) will have another tough matchup next week at home against East Lincoln (6-4, 5-1).

Friday Night Recap Week 10

Friday Night Spotlight Game of the Week

#18 Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy (9-0) 26, #8 Bessemer City (8-1) 14

We had a couple of undefeated squads squaring off in Bessemer City Friday night. Not only were bragging rights on the line, but also Southern Piedmont 1A supremacy. The winner would essentially take the driver’s seat in the conference and have the inside track on the title. Bessemer City entered the game as favorites, ranking ten spots higher than T.J.C.A. in the latest polls. Though neither team had been overly tested this season, it was time to figure out what each team was made of. Somebody had to suffer their first loss of the season.

Early in the first quarter, Bessemer came out firing, taking their opening drive to the house. Senior Zavion Williams capped off the Yellow Jackets inaugural possession, receiving Bruce Gunter’s only TD pass of the game. Williams then punched in the two-point conversion to push the lead to 8-0. On the ensuing possession, the T.J.C.A. Gryphons answered right back. Within a minute, the Gryphons had six points on the board after Junior QB Nomi McMullens connected with Matthew Martin. A failed two-point conversion left the game at 8-6.

Bessemer City stalled out on their next drive and punted back to the Gryphons with 8 minutes to go in the first quarter. Just like the previous T.J.C.A drive, the Gryphons’ quick-strike capability was on full display. A minute after gaining possession, T.J.C.A. was back in the end zone. This time, Senior Max Robbins took a McMullens’ pass 60-yards in for the score. Gryphon Kicker Zander Bell drilled the extra-point for a 13-8 lead.

After exchanging punts, Bessemer City found themselves inside the Gryphon 20-yard line early in the second quarter. A few plays later, Zavion Williams was in the end zone, this time rushing, for his second TD of the game. The Yellow Jackets failed to convert on the two-point conversion to keep the lead 14-13. That would remain the score through halftime.

T.J.C.A took control of the game in the third quarter. McMullens threw his third and fourth TDs of the game. The first, a 13-yard strike to Robbins for the senior’s second TD of the day. Later in the quarter, Stephen Hargett put the nail in the Yellow Jackets coffin after taking a 60-yard McMullens’ bomb to the promised land.

The Yellow Jackets had chances to cut into the Gryphon lead but couldn’t capitalize. A turnover on downs inside the Gryphon 20 early in the fourth quarter deflated any opportunity for a Bessemer City comeback. T.J.C.A. then bled clock with a strong ground attack. On the night, Gryphon runners totaled 180 yards on 35 carries (McMullens: 18/112, Bill Lay: 17/68).

Southeastern Piedmont power now resides with Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy. The Gryphons (9-0, 5-0) own sole possession of first place in the conference and can secure the crown with a victory against Mountain Island Charter (7-2, 4-1). Bessemer City (8-1, 4-1) will travel to Community School of Davidson (4-5, 3-2).

Friday Night Recap Week 9

Friday Night Spotlight Game of the Week

#16 Seventy-First (6-2) 35, #6 Scotland (6-1) 56

In his first feature in the Friday Night Spotlight, Zamir White reminded everyone why he’s the nation’s top running back. The future Georgia Bulldog showed out Friday Night scoring the Scots first three touchdowns of the game including a massive 81-yard dash through several arm tackles to the house. Basically, the power of the Scotland running game was too overwhelming for a Seventy-First squad that has very well over the course of the season but had yet to face a team with the firepower Scotland has.

White and Scotland QB Warren Bell utilized the read-option to perfection all night long. Combined, the duo of White and Bell totaled 597 yards (White: 307, Bell: 290) and scored all 8 Scot touchdowns (Bell: 5, White 3); all rushing. The two also connected on two passes for 48 yards. Bell and Scotland head coach Richard Bailey gave credit to their offensive line after the game. Warren Bell: “The offensive line was blocking well, and we were executing the plays. Seventy-First is a good team, so we tried to come out and get momentum on our side early.” Bailey harped more of the same, “When we’ve got all of our offensive line back, like we had tonight…, it doesn’t really even matter that they know it’s coming.”

Kyler Davis did his best to keep Seventy-First within striking distance. The junior QB was 15 for on 26 pass attempts for 195 yards and all five Falcon touchdowns; four of which were caught by senior Reggie Bryant. Running back Fabion Jones added 117 yards on 17 carries. Seventy-First’s 35 points are the most points allowed to an opponent by Scotland all season.

Early in the 3rd Quarter, only down 21-35 at this point, Seventy-First was marching downfield looking to cut the lead to a single touchdown. On the Scotland 30-yard line, Kyler Davis made his only, yet most devastating mistake of the game. The Falcon QB had single coverage on the outside and his wide receiver was even with his defender. Had Davis put more power behind his throw and led his receiver to the back of the end zone, they had a perfect shot at a touchdown. Instead, the pass was underthrown and fell right into an aware Davon Ratliffe’s hands for an interception on the three-yard line.

On the next drive, Scotland took the ball all the way downfield for another Bell touchdown. The 14-play drive and score pushed the lead to 42-21 and completely deflated Seventy-First’s chances. “We really got just enough stops to get us a little bit of a cushion which was big,” Bailey said after the game; adding “We went 97 yards to go down and score, and that’s big in a game like this.”

The win moves Scotland County (6-1, 4-0) into sole possession of first place in the Sandhills Athletic 4A Conference. This Friday they play at home against conference foe Pinecrest (5-3, 2-2). Seventy-First (6-2, 3-1) will look to get back in the win column at home verses Purnell Swett (3-5, 0-4).

Like last week’s FNS Game of the Week winner, D.W. Butler, Scotland County came into Friday Night’s bout with only one blemish on their record. Also like Butler, the Fighting Scots only loss came in their opening game of the season to now-#1 Mallard Creek. A true testament to how impressive the Mavericks season has progressed. They’ve beaten three of the current top six teams in the state. Don’t tell Wake Forest, Heritage, or West Forsyth though, I’m sure they’d love to get a crack at Mallard Creek.

Friday Night Recap Week 8

Friday Night Spotlight Game of the Week

#8 D.W. Butler (5-1) 28, #9 Myers Park (6-1) 7

Since losing to now-#1 Mallard Creek in the first game of the season, the D.W. Butler Bulldogs have reeled off four straight victories. Friday Night the streak continued at Southwestern 4A rival Myers Park. The Mustangs are not slouches either, coming into Friday’s contest Myers Park was a perfect 6-0 and featured one of the state’s most high-powered offenses. Not once this season have the Mustangs scored less than 21 points in a game. That was until they met the buzz saw that is the Butler Bulldog defense.

Myers Park controlled the first half of the game, mainly by dictating field position. On average, the Mustangs started their first-half drives near midfield while Butler’s average first half starting spot was their own 16-yard line. However, Myers Park was unable to capitalize on the great field position as they were only able to muster seven points in the half. The lone score came on Sophomore stud WR Muhsin Muhammad III’s 29-yard TD reception from Brayden Hawkins.

The offensive struggles continued for the Mustangs in the second half. Myers Park had a chance to take total control of the game early. Their first two drives started inside the Butler 40, but couldn’t take advantage either time. Credit the Butler secondary (T.J. Cusick, Damel Hickman, and Keyon Lesane), they shut down the Myers Park three-headed passing attack of Hawkins, Muhammad, and Elijah Bowick.

Butler’s offense finally woke up in the second half. After losing senior star-RB Nijere Peoples to an injury on their first offensive snap of the game, the Bulldogs turned to Sophomore Jamal Worthy to fill the void. After shaking off the cobwebs in the first half, Worthy feasted on the defense. In total, the young RB piled up 152 rushing yards, 117 of which came in the second half. Though he didn’t break the plane himself, Worthy was the driving force behind the Bulldog offense.

Quasean Holmes initiated the Butler assault on the scoreboard. The Sophomore RB tied the game on a run from the Wildcat formation left for 10 yards and a TD. Butler didn’t stop there. After stifling the Myers Park offense again, the Butler offense rewarded its defense by seizing the lead on a Christian Peters 27-yard TD pass to Navarreo Rorie. From there, the Butler defense did the rest, shutting down the Mustangs for the rest of the game. Keyon Lesane padded the lead on an 11-yard TD run on an end around play in the fourth quarter, and Holmes put the final nail in the coffin with 3-yard run for his second TD of the game to give Butler the 28-7 lead.

Butler (5-1, 3-0) will travel to meet up with another Southwestern 4A rival Independence (1-6, 0-3). Myers Park will look to get back into the win column against undefeated conference foe Hickory Ridge (7-0, 3-0) at home.
