State and Dave Doeren Reach Extension

NC State and Dave Doeren Reach Extension

The Dave Doeren Saga

First things first, congratulations to NC State head football coach, Dave Doeren, on a well-deserved contract extension. Early in the season, it was reported Doeren and State were in preliminary talks on an extension. As the season went on, no deal was reached. Then the season ended and vacancies at higher-profile school were floating Doeren as the possible replacement. With Doeren being such a hot commodity, State had to pounce and execute a deal quick. They did and now Doeren is signed to be the Wolfpack head man for at least the next five seasons.

When NC State first hired Doeren after letting go of Tom O’Brien, the initial question was how is this guy going to make us better? O’Brien’s inability to recruit consistent talent limited the Pack’s chances of competing in the ACC. After the 2012 season, O’Brien was released for Doeren who had just led Northern Illinois to back-to-back 11+ win seasons. In Doeren’s first season in Raleigh, State went 3-9. After that first season, there were many questions about the acquisition of Doeren from Pack fans. How Wolfpack fans wish they can take those concerns back now. The highest ranking the Pack ever achieved with O’Brien was 25th in 2010. This season Doeren had NC State as high as 14th in the nation. Counting their pending bowl this season, Doeren has taken State to four straight bowl games.

Arguably the most important stat for State fans for validating a head coach is that coaches record against North Carolina. Doeren and the Pack have won three out of the last four against the Heels, including this season in Chapel Hill. Beating UNC is always a good way to stay a head coach in Raleigh.

How The Extension Got Done

Even with the above information, NC state was still hesitant to pull the trigger on an extension for the coach. Fortunately for Doeren, who genuinely seems to want to be NC State’s head coach, there is a mess in Knoxville. As extension talks with NC State stalled out, a failed coaching search at Tennessee suddenly had its eyes on Dave Doeren. Tennessee Athletic Director John Currie even met with Doeren in Raleigh Wednesday to discuss the job. Nevertheless, this was the leverage Doeren needed to get the deal done. Within 24 hours, Doeren said no to the Vols and it was announced that he and the Wolfpack had a deal in place.

On Thursday, it was announced Doeren had signed a 5-year extension at 3 million a year to stay in Raleigh. Doeren has the recruiting ability to keep the Pack relevant for years to come. He is bringing in top 25 talent and using it to win games. As a result, look for the Pack to build upon their success of this season and try to grow a program that is a factor year in year out in the ACC.
