NC FBS Report Week 10

Week 10 Scoreboard

Week 10 wasn’t kind to FBS teams across NC.

ECU Can’t Handle Houston

East Carolina (2-7, 1-4) 27
Houston (6-3, 4-2) 52

To no surprise, Houston took care of business against ECU with relative ease. ECU’s total offensive yardage, number of first downs, and time of possession were all greater than Houston’s totals, but most of those yards came trying to keep up with the Cougar’s furious assault on the scoreboard. The only statistic that decided this game was turnovers. Houston protected the ball all day long while ECU committed three turnovers. To make matters worse, Houston converted all three into scores.

Warhawks Shock Mountaineers

Appalachian State (5-4, 4-1) 45
UL-Monroe (4-5, 4-3) 52

In an utter nail-biter, Taylor Lamb and ASU tied the game at 45 with less than a minute to play. Louisiana-Monroe didn’t even need all of it. Three plays into the ensuing drive, Monroe QB Caleb Evans found RJ Turner with a deep ball and Turner was in the end zone 50 yards later. With only 23 ticks on the clock remaining, App’s attempt at another game-tying drive fell short. The loss marks ASU’s first conference defeat of the season. The loss also marks the first time the Mountaineers have lost back-to-back games since Taylor Lamb was a freshman.

Charlotte Falls in a Snoozer

UNC-Charlotte (1-8) 0
Old Dominion (3-6) 6

It was a defensive struggle in Norfork Saturday afternoon. In fact, every possession of the game ended in either a punt, a field goal attempt, or a turnover. The difference in the game was Old Dominion’s ability to move the ball just enough to flip field position. That allowed the Monarchs to get into field goal range three times, making two. Charlotte only made it into Nigel Macauley’s range once. He missed. In total, the 49ers only gained 231 yards on the afternoon.

49ers head coach Brad Lambert: “We just couldn’t get anything going with our running game. I thought (Old Dominion) had a good defensive front coming in – and we just couldn’t get going and couldn’t get anything downfield.”

State Hangs Tough, Not Enough

#4 Clemson (8-1, 6-1) 38
#20 NC State (6-3, 4-1) 31

Saturday Night afternoon in Raleigh was electric. The defending National Champions were in town and the Wolfpack were looking for a little revenge from last season. To make the afternoon more intense, the game was basically a de facto ACC Atlantic Division Title Game. The winner between NC State and Clemson would earn the inside track to the ACC Championship Game. After a back and forth first half, State was able to take a 21-17 lead into halftime.

Late in the 3rd, Clemson began to flex their muscle and wear down the Pack. Kelly Bryant directed the Tigers to a 9-play touchdown drive to take the lead with 3 minutes left in the 3rd. Clemson then forced a Wolfpack punt on the next drive. One play later, Tavien Feaster took a run 89 yards for a touchdown to end the quarter. Ryan Finley led State on another drive to cut the lead to three, but on two of NC State’s final drives was intercepted to end the Wolfpack’s chances.

Irish Too Much For Deacons

Wake Forest (5-4, 2-3) 37
#3 Notre Dame (8-1) 48

Despite Wake Forest’s best efforts, the highly-ranking Notre Dame Fighting Irish simply overpowered the Demon Deacons. By halftime, the Irish were already out to a three-touchdown lead. John Wolford played well (28/45, 331 py, 59 ry, 3 TD), but Notre Dame QB Brandon Wimbush stole the show (15/30, 280 py, 110 ry, 3 TD). In total, Notre Dame outgained Wake Forest 710-587.

“We could not get a stop on third down to save our life,” Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said. “The amount of big plays that we gave up on defense today is not acceptable. That was the story of the day.”
